Gazebos & Outdoor Umbrellas
A gazebo or outdoor umbrella puts shade where you need it, from the patio and pool to the beach and the campsite. Choose a pop up gazebo for a portable shelter you can pack away, or a cantilever umbrella to shade an outdoor setting without a pole in the middle.

Pop up gazebos and portable gazebos
A pop up gazebo has a folding frame that opens out in a few minutes, which makes it the usual choice for a camping gazebo, a beach gazebo or a market stall. A portable gazebo should pack into a carry bag and be light enough for two people to lift. For regular use, look for a heavy duty gazebo with a thicker frame, and a waterproof gazebo canopy if you want cover from showers as well as sun.
An outdoor gazebo that stays in the backyard all summer can be heavier. A gazebo tent with zip-on walls gives more shelter from wind and low sun.
3x3 gazebo, 6x3 gazebo and other sizes
A 3×3 gazebo is the most common size: it covers a small outdoor table, a barbecue or a campsite kitchen. A 6×3 gazebo doubles the cover for larger groups, stalls and sports days, and a 4.5 x 3 gazebo sits in between. A small gazebo around 2.4 m suits tight courtyards and car boots. Measure the ground you have, then allow extra room for guy ropes and weights.
Gazebo walls, weights and covers
Gazebo walls block wind, low sun and rain from the side; a gazebo with walls on two or three sides also gives privacy. Gazebo weights or sand bags hold the legs down on paving and sand where pegs will not go in. A spare gazebo canopy or gazebo cover is worth having once the original fades or tears.
Semi permanent, metal and wooden gazebos
A semi permanent gazebo with a steel or aluminium frame stays up through the season and suits a garden gazebo over a dining or lounge area. A wooden gazebo is a fixed structure, so check the footprint, the fixing method and whether your council needs to approve it before you buy.
Outdoor umbrellas for the patio, pool and garden
An outdoor umbrella is the quickest way to shade a table or a couple of chairs. A cantilever umbrella hangs the canopy from a side arm, so nothing stands in the middle of your setting, and most tilt or rotate to follow the sun. A market umbrella has a centre pole and fits through a table. As a patio umbrella or garden umbrella, either works; as a pool umbrella, look for a rust-resistant frame.
A large outdoor umbrella needs a heavier umbrella base. Check the base weight the maker recommends for the canopy size, and close the umbrella when the wind picks up.
Beach umbrellas and UV protection
A beach umbrella should be light to carry and anchor firmly in sand. For sun protection, a UV umbrella lists a UPF rating for the fabric; UPF 50+ is the highest rating. A sun umbrella with a vented canopy copes better with gusts, though no umbrella is fully windproof.
Gazebo and outdoor umbrella FAQ
What size gazebo do I need?
A 3×3 gazebo covers about 9 square metres, enough for a small table and chairs or a camp kitchen. Go to a 6×3 gazebo for bigger groups, a market stall or a team area.
How do I stop a gazebo blowing away?
Peg every leg and use guy ropes on grass, and add gazebo weights on paving or sand. Take the gazebo down in strong wind rather than relying on weights alone.
Is a pop up gazebo waterproof?
It depends on the canopy. Many are water resistant for light showers; a waterproof gazebo has a coated canopy and sealed seams. Check the product details before you buy.
Is a cantilever umbrella better than a market umbrella?
A cantilever umbrella shades a setting without a centre pole and can be angled as the sun moves. A market umbrella costs less, takes less room and fits through a table with an umbrella hole.
What base does an outdoor umbrella need?
The larger the canopy, the heavier the umbrella base it needs, and a cantilever umbrella needs more weight than a centre-pole one. Follow the base weight the manufacturer lists for your umbrella.
